One of a kind and fabulous
describes this splendid piece of Ecuador real estate a half hour from
the city of Ibarra and 15 minutes from the hot springs of
Chachimbiro. When Gary got a call about a two-acre mini-estate
that was going to be offered for sale, I tagged along with him to check
it out. Boy, am I glad I did!
“Wait ‘til you see these
tropical gardens,” said the friend who told Gary about the
estate. “I’ve never seen anything like this before in
Ecuador.”
Driving through the
wooden gate into the walled compound was like stepping into
another world. Fragile Ecuador orchids, tall lacy ferns,
an arbor, and exotic plants of all kinds welcomed me. I was
intrigued, enthralled
Years of Hard Work Have Resulted in a
Floral Wonderland
The master gardener who manages
this estate says an estimated 1400 different varieties of
Ecuador orchids, tropical tree ferns, giant palms and fragrant flowers
miraculously bloom in a semi-arid environment. Thanks to the
tireless efforts of a dedicated and passionate owner and his live-in
master gardener, plants grow in profusion where they
ordinarily shouldn’t.

Few private Ecuador tropical gardens have such an array of
magnificent flora. There are both white and peach-colored
Floripondio, those trumpet-shaped flowers with the incredible fragrance
that I call belladonna. There are bromeliads of many different
sizes and colors, heliconia and sweet-smelling plumeria, all exotic
flowers I recall from my years in Hawaii.
The gardener/caretaker has lavished his
skills on this estate since its inception about 8 years ago. He
and his family live in a charming little caretaker’s cottage on
the grounds with its own inner courtyard and garden.
Paths to Wander and Trees to Climb

While we were there the
caretaker’s little girl was playing in the front yard with her
dog under a tree with wide-spreading branches. What a wonderful
place to grow up, surrounded in natural beauty enhanced by
human imagination. I was reminded of my own childhood in
Louisiana playing with my dog under a giant sycamore throughout the
long, humid summers.

I especially loved the side entrance
that takes you past the orchid garden. I don’t think anyone
can just pass by without taking a longer look at the many unusual
specimens. I couldn’t. I
wandered down the little path that led through the Ecuador orchids in
this tropical garden paradise and checked out each rare blooming
orchid.

There were tiny yellow ones and great
big purple ones. My favorites were the little yellow and
rust orchids that hang in clusters. Special aerial
misters keep the area jungle-moist.
The side entrance gate opens on a walled
garden courtyard and a large covered pavilion with its own beehive oven
for pizza and parties. Artful glass and metal doors beckoned
invitingly and we followed the owner into the house.
A House That Perfectly Fits Its Garden
Setting

The house was impeccably designed and
built by Ileana Viteri, the architect daughter of one of the finest
artists in Ecuador, the painter Oswaldo Viteri. Placed
on the land to take advantage of light, air and views, the
2-bedroom, 2-bath home has high massively–beamed ceilings, plenty
of large glass windows and garden views from every window.

Natural materials abound: a thick
eucalyptus countertop/bar and island in the kitchen, wide granite steps
and granite fireplace, wooden built-in shelves.

A sunken living room pit faces the
fireplace, which is flanked by shelves that display fine
Andean artifacts and figurines.
The Entire Estate is a Feast for the Eyes
Some of the top-quality
furniture, sculpture, paintings, art books and art objects can
be purchased, perhaps even an ancient Peruvian tapestry. The
owner says the furnishings are negotiable. He will keep his
much-loved family heirlooms, but the lucky new owner may gain not only
a fine estate and magical gardens but also furniture and decorative
pieces that perfectly compliment the house.

The grounds are elegant and expansive,
leading the eye to different areas where special plants are
showcased. There are also several monumental stone
antiquities that the owner purchased and had brought to the
site, carefully placing them in his garden of delights.
