Bird Watching Ecuador:  Mindo Arboretto Riverside Villas

Ever since I read the book, “Swiss Family Robinson,” as a kid, I fantasized about living in a tree house.   And one of my most memorable experiences about visiting Disney World in Florida was that same Swiss Family tree house that came to life with Disney magic.

So you can imagine my delight when I learned about a tree-house community called Arboretto Riverside Villas (ARV) that is under construction in Mindo, Ecuador, about an hour outside Quito.

This tropical cloud forest region of Ecuador is one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world.  The Mindo area was named an International Birding Area in 1997.  It has more than 450 bird species and half of all the hummingbirds in the world.

Mindo is also a haven for butterflies that dart among the trees and dance over the numerous streams and waterfalls.

The developers of ARV are creating something designed to make every potential homeowner’s heart sing.   It will raise the level of Ecuador bird watching to a luxury past time.  This is an opportunity to live and play in one of the world’s most special places.

While the community is not specifically for bird watchers, the developers believe that ARV will be a great investment opportunity for buyers who want to offer their houses as vacation rentals.   A vacation rental program will be part of service offered by ARV management.

This gated community goes way beyond simply living.  The ARV community supports a higher sense of social end environmental responsibility.  It gives investors the chance to combat global warming while seeking health and longevity in nature.

The organization is cooperating with the local organic waste management facility to improve its efficiency.  A couple from Australia, who bought a lot in ARV, have made Mindo their home—even before building their house—and are currently volunteering as English teachers at the local public school, teaching both students and staff.

ARV patrons will assist in conserving more than 900 acres of forest.  For those who desire, the homes will offer rental income potential to Ecuador bird watchers from around the world.   ARV is involved in community development for the small town of Mindo, just a few miles from ARV’s gates.  ARV offers employment to Mindo residents and volunteer opportunities for ARV residents.

Arboretto is made up of 36 lots, clustered in 25 acres of former pastures, and has a community back yard of 100 acres.  Through strategic alliances with neighbors, Arboretto offers exclusive access to a 900-acre private reserve managed by the newly-founded Green Mindo Foundation.  An entire wilderness teeming with wildlife and Ecuador’s unique flora awaits your exploration.

One of the key elements to watch when purchasing property in an Ecuador development is whether deeds can be issued.  If deeds cannot be issued, then the  developer has not yet received permission from the authorities to create the development.  Hence, there can be greater potential for problems.

Arboretto has issued its first deeds and the project has all the Municipality approvals.  Lots are laid out, roads and infrastructure is mostly complete.

Linda and I have known the co-owner and project manager of Arboretto, Carlos Tobar, for several years.  We visited Mindo with him and were delighted with what we saw.  The peace and tranquility of the natural surroundings brings a sense of great serenity the moment you step on the property.

Carlos’ infectious good humor and passion for this project are palpable and it’s easy to see that he has put his heart and soul into making this dream a reality for others to share and enjoy.  Carlos holds an MBA degree with honors from George Washington University in International Business and Finance.

Other members of the team are Andreas Cordova, a Quito attorney in an established family firm of more than 60 years’ standing, well-known in the expat crowd; and Mario Arias, responsible for design and creativity.

Mario holds an advanced degree in applied arts from Paris Ecole Nationale Superieure.  He has done several design projects in the U.S., Spain, Panama and Ecuador.

All three of the project creators plan to build their own homes in Mindo, so you can be assured of having great neighbors.  Bird watching in Ecuador will gain a great boost with the completion of this project.
