Arasha Resort and Spa, located about 2 ½ hours’ drive from Quito, has hundreds of species of birds, plants and insects, making it one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet.
Over 260 of the 500 species of birds in the area can be spotted at the resort. Guided bird-watching tours in the evening and early morning can be arranged.
It was exciting just to count the numerous different bird species glimpsed from our window.
Or wander around the resort, exploring the many paths and trails, and you will discover birds, butterflies, all kinds of strange and wonderful flora and fauna.
Catch the staff at feeding time and they will let you interact with a parrot.
Butterflies, too, are plentiful and colorful.
The staff leave ripe bananas around to attract butterflies. It’s fun to watch them suck out the fruit with their long, thin proboscises. The feeding tube functions like a straw that the butterfly moves back and forth to extract food. Easy photo opps.
Here are a few more photos of rainforest birds and butterflies glimpsed on a recent trip there.
Arasha nestles in what is one of the world's 'hot spots." A "hot spot" is a biodiverse region where over 1500 endemic plant species live but in which over 70% of the natural habitat has been lost.
We can all do our part to support these treasured parts of our planet in whatever way possible.
