Kashama, a Jungle Retreat and Spa

Kashama, one of our favorite places in Ecuador, is a jungle retreat off the beaten path about thirty kilometers from the agricultural city of Santo Domingo de los Colorados.

After turning right off the main road from Santo Domingo to Esmeraldas, one arrives at a rural setting surrounded by nature, lush plants and the soothing sound of falling water from a dramatic waterfall plunging into a wide pool. 

Nestled all around, built into the cliffs and hugging the hillsides are charming fantasy bungalows, connected by artful stone bridges and walkways.  Each bungalow is of a different design painted in a rainbow of colors.

The whole area appears to be the dream of a very creative mind meticulously manifested into physical reality.  I feel as though I have entered a world unlike any other, where cozy beds with bright-colored linens and comfy hammocks beckon me to rest awhile.  The rooms feature rock outcroppings and rustic furniture.

The restaurant is close to the pool and waterfall and features live piano music.  Higher up to the right of the falls is the spa with massage rooms and steam room.

This is one of the few places in Ecuador where you can feel wonderfully isolated from civilization yet have at your fingertips a myriad of therapeutic treatments as well as many outdoor activities in which to participate.  Also available is river rafting, hiking and horseback riding.
